YOUTH WORK PERMIT PROCESS IS CHANGING
Effective October 2, 2026
A new Michigan law, Public Act 196 of 2024, is changing how work permits for minors are processed.
Currently, schools are responsible for issuing and revoking work permits. Starting October 2, 2026, the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) will take over this responsibility.
Key Changes
- New Online System: Minors and employers will use LEO’s free registration website to apply for and process work permits.
- Work Hour Restrictions:
- 14- and 15-year-olds may work only between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. from June 1 through Labor Day, and between 7am and 7pm during the rest of the year.
- During the school year, work is limited to 3 hours per day and 18 hours per week.
- When school is not in session, minors may work up to 40 hours per week.
- Simplified Process for Schools & Employers: Schools will no longer issue work permits, reducing administrative responsibilities.

Food Service
Kent City operates under the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) as part of the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs. This means every student can enjoy a healthy breakfast and lunch at NO CHARGE. Even though meals will be provided for free, it is important for families to continue sharing confidential household income information in order for our students to receive full access to federal and state funding for educational programs that our students are entitled to.
As a household, you are responsible for completing the Education Benefits Form. You can find this form at Kent City Family Portal or on our website under the Food Service link. Education Benefits Forms are also used in determining Sun Bucks payments, fee waivers and Title I funding for the school.

2026-27 Sports Start Dates and Coaches Information Spanish Version
MHSAA Physical Exam Requirement
Any student-athlete who has not had a sports physical dated on or after April 15 of the current calendar year will need to set up an appointment with their doctor to have ans exam completed before participating in athletics.
